Record water level causes flood in Budapest
In the summer of 2013 Budapest experienced a record water level of the Duna. Fortunately there were no serious damages in the buildings or the riverbank. After the spring melting it is normal that the river brings an increased amount of water which rises the water level but it is rare when the flood causes danger in the lower riverbank. It was a unique phenomenon and experience for all the inhabitants of the capital. The Great flood in 1838 ruined many buildings and streets by the riverside. In the following years the protection lines were strengthened.
